Arkansas Tylenol Lawsuit

Research suggests that prenatal exposure to acetaminophen may increase a child’s risk for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism.

A new class-action lawsuit approved in October of 2022 claims that major retailers failed to warn that using the fever-reduction medication, acetaminophen, during pregnancy could cause autism spectrum disorder and ADHD in children.

A 2018 analysis published by the American Journal of Epidemiology revealed a 20% higher risk of autism and a 30% higher risk of ADHD for children who had prolonged exposure to acetaminophen during fetal development.

In 2019, Researchers at John Hopkins collected umbilical cord blood from 996 births and measured the amount of acetaminophen in each sample. Based on their results, they supported the link between acetaminophen exposure in the womb and ADHD and autism spectrum disorder and underscored the need for additional research.

Additional research has continued to link taking Tylenol while pregnant to neurodevelopmental disorders. According to a Systematic Review by Cureus, “[the research] showed an association between acetaminophen use and listed neurodevelopmental outcomes. Long-term use, increased dose, and frequency were associated with a stronger association.”

Is Tylenol Safe to Take During Pregnancy?

Acetaminophen products, like Tylenol, have long been assumed to be the safest pain reliever to take during pregnancy. Too much usage during pregnancy has been tied to ADHD and autism spectrum disorder. However, studies note that taking small amounts of acetaminophen during pregnancy did not increase risks. In one study, a small amount constituted fewer than eight days.

For fever and pain, health experts still point to Tylenol as the safest medication to take during pregnancy. In fact, doctors advise pregnant women to take acetaminophen rather than aspirin or ibuprofen, which can cause fetal organ damage.
