Two Lives Lost in 5-Vehicle Collision on I-40

59-year-old Mary D. Masi (Soddy Daisy, Tennessee) and 59-year-old Donald C. Swofford (Waynesboro, Tennessee) were both fatally injured in an accident that took place on Wednesday, September 16, 2020.

At approximately 4:22 a.m. Ms. Masi and Mr. Swofford were traveling west on Interstate 40 near mile marker 72. Several vehicles were stopped ahead on Interstate 40 due to a previous accident including four vehicles involved in the accident (2018 International semi-truck, 2015 Volvo semi-truck, 2009 International semi-truck, 2017 International semi-truck).

Ms. Masi and Mr. Swofford’s 18-wheeler (2020 Freightliner semi-truck) rear-ended one 18-wheeler before “swerving out of control” and sideswiping a 2nd 18-wheeler. Their semi-truck rear-ended another 18-wheeler causing another collision before Ms. Masi and Mr. Swofford’s trailer detached from their semi-truck and overturned before colliding with a second trailer causing both trailers to catch fire.

56-year-old Darrel A. Miller (Ward, AR) was injured in the accident.

Those involved were transported with injuries to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

Conditions were reportedly clear and dry.
