21-year-old Loses Life in Head-on Collision with MEMS Ambulance

21-year-old Briana Carter (Little Rock, AR) was fatally injured in an accident that took place shortly after 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 6, 2019.

At approximately 5:17 a.m. Ms. Carter was traveling west on Interstate 40 in the eastbound lanes of traffic near mile marker 142. 22-year-old Paul Sanchez (North Little Rock, AR) and 23-year-old Darius Williams (Maumelle, AR) were traveling east in the eastbound lanes of traffic on Interstate 40. Ms. Carter was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Impala and collided head-on with Mr. Sanchez and Mr. Williams. Mr. Sanchez was driving a 2016 Sprinter MEMS ambulance.

MEMS released the following statement after the incident:

“Just after 5 AM this morning MEMS unit 87 was involved in a significant head on collision. The crew was returning to Little Rock on I40 near Morgan (not patient loaded) when they encountered a car traveling west bound in the east bound lanes. The collision caused massive damage to both vehicles. The driver of the other vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The two MEMS Medics were extricated, the Medic driving taking more than an 1/2 hour to free. One Medic has minor injuries the other is stable but requiring surgery. Please continue to hold the Medics as well as the family that lost a loved one in your prayers.”

Conditions at the time were reportedly clear and dry.
