Two Lives Lost in Fatal Hwy 27 Wreck South of Kirby, AR

31-year-old Ashley N. Penrod (Kirby, AR) and 87-year-old Verna R. Moore (Kirby, AR) were both fatally injured in an accident on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

At approximately 1:45 p.m. Ms. Ashley Penrod was driving south on Highway 27 near Cowhide Cove. Ms. Penrod was negotiating a right-hand curve when a northbound 18-wheeler (2014 Freightliner) crossed the centerline. The 18-wheeler lost control while navigating the same curve and began to spin counterclockwise crossing into the southbound lane.

Ms. Penrod attempted to avoid colliding with the 18-wheeler but the Freightliner collided with the driver’s side of Ms. Penrod’s 2020 Ford Explorer. Ms. Penrod sustained fatal injuries in the collision. Ms. Verna Moore was a passenger in the Ford vehicle and sustained fatal injuries in the collision as well.

Weather conditions were cloudy and road conditions wet at the time of the accident.
