Similac and Enfamil Baby Formula Linked to NEC?
Lawsuits are being filed against Enfamil manufacturer, Mead Johnson, and Similac manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories. The lawsuits allege that the manufacturers of Enfamil and Similac knew or should have known that their baby formula products could cause necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).
If your child consumed Enfamil or Similac products and developed NEC, contact Taylor King today at 870.246.0505. The lawyers at Taylor King Law are prepared to answer your questions, at no cost to you.
What is NEC?
Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) is a significant gastrointestinal condition that primarily affects premature infants. NEC is an intestinal disease that inflames intestinal tissue, causing the tissue to die. NEC typically develops in two to six weeks after birth.
Only about 1 in 10,000 full-term infants are affected by necrotizing enterocolitis; however, 1 in 1,000 premature babies are affected by NEC.
Symptoms of NEC
While some children experience mild symptoms, NEC can cause severe and even life-threatening symptoms. Symptoms associated with NEC include:
- Abdominal pain
- Swollen or bloated stomach
- Discolored stomach
- Difficulty eating
- Blood in stool or change in bowel movements
- Vomiting green or yellow liquids (containing bile)
- Lethargic or less active
- Unstable body temperature
- Apnea (pauses in breathing)
- Bradycardia (slower heart rate)
- Hypotension (low blood pressure)
- Weak pulse
Does Similac and Enfamil Baby Formula Cause NEC?
Studies indicate that neonatal babies that were formula-fed were at an increased risk of necrotizing enterocolitis. Research suggests premature babies fed formula (including Enfamil and Similac) were as much as three times more likely to develop NEC.
As far back as 1990, studies released extensive links between premature infants given cow’s milk-based formula and NEC. Additional studies have continued to indicate a link between cow’s milk-based formulas and a higher risk for NEC in neonatal babies.
Despite these links, the manufacturers of Enfamil and Similac have failed to warn parents and medical providers of the increased risk.
