What is Ozempic?
Ozempic is an injection drug used to treat type 2 diabetes. According to their website, Ozempic is an injectable prescription medicine for adults with type 2 diabetes used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar.
Does Ozempic Cause Gallbladder Disease?
A systematic review and analysis released in March 2022 found that the use of GLP-1 RAs was associated with an increased risk of gallbladder or biliary diseases, “especially when used at higher doses, for longer durations, and for weight loss.”
The study, conducted by Dr. Huabing Zhang and published by JAMA Internal Medicine, concluded that physicians and patients should be concerned about the risks of gallbladder disease and biliary disease in connection with the use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), like that of Ozempic.
According to the study, the primary outcome was a composite of gallbladder or biliary diseases, including gallbladder disorders. Secondary outcomes included bile duct obstruction, stenosis, and stone; biliary colic, cyst, and fistula; biliary tract cancer; cholecystectomy, cholecystitis, and cholelithiasis; and cholangitis.
But what’s most concerning is the associated risk between Ozempic and gallbladder disease dates back well before 2022. As early as 2016, a comparative study found that the use of GLP-1 analogues was associated with an increased risk of bile duct and gallbladder disease. In 2017, a meta-analysis of the effects of Ozempic found an increased risk of cholelithiasis.

The manufacturer of Ozempic, Novo Nordisk, changed the warning label of Ozempic in March 2022 to warn of gallbladder disease. Prior to March, physicians and patients were unaware of the increased risks associated with using Ozempic.
While Novo Nordisk was aware of the increased risk of gallbladder disease they negligently failed to warn doctors and consumers of the risks associated with Ozempic for years.

Does Ozempic Help You Lose Weight?
Ozempic is designed for those with type 2 diabetes. However, the drug has gained popularity for its weight loss effects. On TikTok, the hashtag #Ozempic has been viewed more than 273 million times, and celebrity promotion has driven its “off-label” use.
How does it help you lose weight? Semaglutide (generic name of Ozempic) lowers blood sugar levels and regulates insulin. The drug imitates a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which is naturally produced in our intestines. In doing so, the drug can limit appetite by signaling to the body that it feels full.
Is it Dangerous to Use Ozempic for Weight Loss?
The F.D.A. has not approved Ozempic for weight loss, and Ozempic’s website notes “Ozempic is not a weight-loss drug.”
As noted by Dr. Janice Jin Hwang, chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the UNC School of Medicine, it’s not been systematically tested and without sufficient research, it’s unclear how damaging the side effects of Ozempic for weight loss could be.
